Michael Gurley is an accomplished singer/songwriter/guitarist
who hails from Los Angeles. His story begins when he joined
Louis Gutierrez in the band Louis and Clark in the late 1980's
as their lead vocalist and guitar player. The band, which included
future Dada bassist Joie Calio, recorded an E.P. entitled HOLLYWOOD
CAPACITY MAXIMUM. The band split up at the end of the decade,
with Gurley and Calio deciding to remain together.
Along with drummer Phil Leavitt, Gurley and Calio formed the
L.A.- based alternative rock band Dada in 1990. The trio recorded
four critically acclaimed albums and cultivated a devout fan
base. Widely known for their 1993 modern rock hit "Dizz
Knee Land," which climbed to #2 on the Billboard Singles
chart, Dada delivered catchy pop melodies and insightful lyrics
with a genuine rock 'n' roll conviction. The group played their
final show in the summer of 1999.
Gurley's jazz material was first committed to disc with the
release of CHAMPAGNE, CHAMPAGNE, a collection of original compositions
and a couple modern standards, on which Mike says he gets "to
shake out my Sinatra licks." Recorded in 1996, Gurley and
Gilmore mined the same cool lounge-jazz vein as Harry Connick
or Frank Sinatra circa 1956. The ten selections were recorded
live in the.
In 1998, the same lineup recorded a more elaborate jazz effort,
entitled EUPHORIA. This time around, guest instrumentalists
were brought in to broaden the spectrum of sound. The result
is a highly polished, stunningly mature jazz vocal album.
